What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

OCD is a psychiatric illness that presents itself with cycles of distressing thoughts followed by anxiety and distress, to be relieved by performing compulsive actions or thoughts.

How Common is OCD?

  • Rough estimates based on scientific studies show the prevalence of OCD in communities to vary from about 7 to 20%.

What are common symptoms of OCD?

  • OCD typically presents with symptoms linked to the digestive system such as: 

    • Obsessions (पुन्हा पुन्हा येणारे त्रासदायक विचार). ​This happens typically after eating, and gets relieved by passing bowel movements. A typical description is within minutes of eating, even after having passed bowel movements in the day, the pain will manifest.

    • Distress (मानसिक त्रास, तणाव). This may typically present as watery stools or bowel movements. Another classic complaint will be having an urge to pass bowel movements instantly and inability to wait or hold it in for long. 

    • Compulsions (बंधक कृती). Patients may experience difficulty in passing stools, or even if they pass stools, may have a sensation of not having cleared the stomach adequately. 

     Apart from these common and typical symptoms, IBS also has a few concurrent symptoms: ​

  • Sleep disturbances (झोपेच्या तक्रारी)

  • Depression, stress (सततच्या त्रासामुळे, आणि विचित्र लक्षणांमुळे नैराश्य, तणाव)

When can one suspect to be suffering from OCD? 

  • A little anxiety is common and even natural. Anxiety does not mean OCD. 

  • Classical symptom triad of OCD will be 

    • Intensely distressing thoughts, which are recurrent and intrusive. ​

    • Immense mental stress, psychological burden due to those thoughts. 

    • Remission of symptoms by performing a compulsive act. 

  • It is important to remember, that people with OCD are often subjects of praise or accolades early on. Their hand washing, chanting, praying is looked upon as good habits, attention to details and cleanliness. Patients usually consult a psychiatrist when symptoms become uncontrollable, or socially embarassing. 

When should one consult a psychiatrist for OCD?

  • When the diagnosis of OCD is established and confirmed.

  • As early as possible after suspecting to be suffering from OCD.
